Surrendering Your Pet

Surrendering Your Dog

If you have a Shih Tzu or a related toy breed dog with whom you need assistance, we may be able to help.  We do operate at a virtually FULL capacity most of the time.  The first step in the process is to complete our online owner surrender form. Once that form is received and reviewed, we can then determine if we have an available foster home or potentially how soon a spot may become available.  Please keep in mind that while we are a rescue, we are not a sanctuary. We can only take in dogs that are deemed to be adoptable.

Effective April 1, 2014, all owner surrenders are required to have been seen by a veterinarian within 30 days of being surrendered and have a current rabies vaccine and a current heartworm test for the safety of all of our foster dogs and your dog.

The first step in the process would be to submit an online owner release application.

Owner Surrender Form

Before you surrender your pet please consider the following:

If you are giving your dog up due to behavior problems, consider contacting one of the resources on our Training Resources page. Most behavior problems can be significantly reduced or eliminated with professional help.

If you have allergies, know that allergies are mostly caused by animal dander, not their fur! To help keep dander to a minimum, bathe and brush your pet often. Vacuum your home and furniture thoroughly, wash bedding, counters etc. often. Nutritional supplements are also available to help with skin and coat problems in pets. Consult with your veterinarian for additional recommendations.

At the time of your surrender or before, please bring the following with you:

  • A copy of vaccination records, medical history including heartworm preventative schedule and and special needs this animal may have.

  • Any items, such as dog bed(s), crate, toys, etc. that will ease the transition.

  • Surrender donations greatly assist us with the care and medical needs of your pet.  We appreciate any amount to help offset any costs to help find your animal the best possible home, but we require a $50 surrender fee per dog.
